Chicago Police to Release Videos of Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting Amidst Calls for Transparency

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is set to unveil videos on Tuesday related to a fatal officer-involved shooting that transpired last month.

The incident unfolded at approximately 6 p.m. on March 21 at the intersection of North Avers Avenue and West Ferdinand Street. According to the Chicago Police Department (CPD), officers initiated a vehicle stop, during which the individual inside opened fire at them. In response, officers returned fire.

During the exchange, one officer sustained a gunshot wound to the left wrist and was transported to Stroger Hospital in good condition. Four other officers received medical attention at area hospitals as a precaution and are reported to be in good condition, CPD confirmed.

The individual, identified as 26-year-old Dexter Reed by the Cook County medical examiner’s office, succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds after being transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital.

Following the tragic event, Reed’s family urged Mayor Brandon Johnson and Police Supt. Larry Snelling to provide them with all available video footage pertaining to the shooting. Expressing their distress, they stated, “…we still don’t know how and why Dexter was shot by these plain-clothed police officers. What we do know, leaves us very troubled.”

In light of COPA’s scheduled video release, several organizations plan to stage a protest at CPD’s 11th district at 6 p.m.

However, COPA has not disclosed the exact time the videos will be made public.
